Attorney General Pam Bondi Announces Life Sentence for SUR-13 Gang Member
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that a SUR-13 gang member who was prosecuted by the Office of Statewide Prosecution was sentenced to life in prison today. Daniel “Boom” Robledo, 26, was sentenced to life in prison for last year’s Second Degree Murder of a Manatee County man. Robledo was convicted in March of gunning down Elvis Ruiz, 27, during a street confrontation. In addition, Robledo is charged with Racketeering and three counts of Armed Robbery. He is scheduled to stand trial on those charges in November.
“This man is the fourth SUR-13 gang member sentenced to prison in recent months. He deserves to spend his life behind bars, and I commend the State Attorney's Office and the Office of Statewide Prosecution for helping rid Florida’s communities of violent gang activity,” stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred when Robledo attempted to initiate a street fight in the early hours of July 23, 2011. When Ruiz tried to stop the fight, Robledo shot Ruiz in the chest with a shotgun. Ruiz was unarmed.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office for the Twelfth Circuit collaborated with the Office of Statewide Prosecution on this case.
This is the latest member of the well-known SUR-13 gang to be sent to prison. Last month, three members of the gang in Palm Beach County were sent to prison for a total of 150 years. Those three men were part of a larger group of 14 gang members who were charged with two homicides, a drive-by shooting, armed robberies, retaliatory arson, aggravated battery and multiple theft and drug-related charges.
